So I was sketching in pencil today, something I never do anymore.. a nice little picture emerged. It wasn't until I was editing the colour balance in Photoshop and got to see the picture at length (ha) that I saw it.. oh man.

I had drawn a dick.

He's balancing on an egg with a cracked tip, no less. No matter which you slice it, penis is all over this picture. I was crestfallen.

I'm going to call it 'Slick Rick's Egg-mazing Balancing Act'.

Anthropomorphic nipples are obviously next.

I did the album artwork for Cubehead's eponymous CD. We wanted a traditional handmade feel, so it was hand-inked on a 94 year-old vintage book, with the liner notes written on the interior of the cover. It was then scanned + assembled to echo the original hardcover.

The interior of the CD case. As Cubehead mixes in video game style chiptunes into gritty DIY punk, we chose lettering that nodded to the retro 8-bit font of computer terminals mashed up with pixação elements, a raw + cryptic style of Brazilian graffiti.

This was an awesome project, sweet to see it all come together!

Longboards

I did two custom longboards at the EP!C Sustainability Expo this weekend. They are factory seconds that can't be sold due to small defects, and I was able to get them raw, right after they were cut. I then inked them and gave them a triple-coat of sealant. They look awesome up close!

2500 Block

Finished up a really cool new piece, "2500 Block". I knew as soon as I found the frame in a thrift store it would be epic! As the piece evolved, it was fun + exciting to play different parts in what makes a wall; tagging it with an oil pen as a vandal, whitewashing it as a graffiti cleanup crew, decrepit advertisements for things not sold in 25 years still visible, wheatpasting up DIY posters, angry shopkeepers trying to peel them down, wind + rain + time washing the whole little opera away.. building the yeti up was a challenge, with so much spackle + gel and miniature lines that get completely buried, glossed over, drawn again.. there is so much in the piece that can't be seen anymore, but those hidden parts still exude their energy and intent, each building off another. A wall of exposed secrets.

A lovely ink cover illustration for "McFirth's Comprehensive Guide to Dying Alone" (Mssrs. Chop & Logik, Fleet Street, E.C. 1891), a handy & timely tome that speaks to us all as mortals. The expression is one mirrored on many when contemplating the inevitability of their demise; but as McFirth lays out his research & describes the structures of thought & consciousness, we see that dying alone doesn't mean dying lonely. With masterfully rendered Four Quadrant maps, he reveals death to be a sublimation & the return of our atoms & spirit to the Cosmos, and not something to fear at all.

He was subsequently executed for Hearsay & Aggravated Witchcraft, but his work lives on in this exquisitely-maintained volume.

The Yetican Empire

I've found a curious book detailing the exploits + general awesomeness of the མི་རྒོད་, or Migoi Empire. A rare breed of yeti, they dominated the mountains of Nepal + Tibet, where they listened to thrash metal, drank moonshine, and high-fived each other. Although their drunken orgies resulted in a thriving population, they were hunted for their distinctive heraldic fur, which became a status symbol for the nobility in other parts of the world. They eventually brought about their own extinction, primarily through a ritual involving a primitive form of snowboarding, cliffs, and 1080° backflips.

The book contains an actual sample of Royal Migoi fur! A rare find, indeed!

I took 'Baltic Bandit' - one of my first acrylic experiments - and painted over it, and stamped ink all over it, then layered, and layered, and layered some more. Up close, the ink/oil/gesso combo makes for interesting depth illusions. Here's a visual history:

Excerpted from my sketchbook:

"Started on the metre-tall Synergist collab last night, made some good progress in my mind! It's a little frustrating working on something so finicky to approach in terms of easel positioning + finding stability for fine flowing lines. I need to be able to be fluid around the work, and I enjoy flipping it to hit whatever angles work best. It's a good learning experience in terms of me as an artist + my methods at the very least, + it's turning out excellent!

This kind of material practice is more educational that theorizing in school for me, and ultimately more profitable, as we are selling the result. My aim is to strike a balance between injecting a high amount of skill + attention into my linework, to focus on weaving, intertwining + depth, and to stay freeform + fluid, keep the creation process natural, spontaenous + fun. It's very rewarding!

I likened this flowing hair linework to meditation earlier, and yesterday it struck me how accurate a metaphor that is- it hurts my back, it's at times boring, frustrating + my mind wanders + I get perturbed when lines to fall into place, and I must work + focus to bring them back to order. But, there are these moments of illumination + clarity wherein my hand flows with perfect grace, the board fills up with detail, and I am connected with energies greater than my own. And those fleeting feelings give me fuel to overcome + work through any frustration.

Reworked my customized broken snowboard...

into a framed piece that's almost the same size as the original: 133cm!

(photos are off-color due to it being behind glass, so lighting it was an issue.)

Text reads: "Freedom isn't about escaping outside pressures or forces... true freedom comes from within. So, breathe deep, open your heart, and be free."

I wrote that in the summer, but it truly clicked in my head much later what it meant to me. I enjoy finding new meaning + mental connections with things from my past as I journey through life.

Killer Cures

Fear is the germ spread most easily... while not a commentary on any current or past pandemics that we fixate on, it can apply. The character is one who, like most of us, subscribes to the dogma of "better living through chemistry". Yet, when the chemicals are examined, they are revealed to be lethal. Do the things we imagine to improve our lives actually cause more damage? Is temporary relief worth later suffering? Above all, the fear you feel can infect the person next to you, or someone on the other side of the world. How will we conquer it?
